This is a pretty good dhal recipe…
- 300g red lentils
- 850ml water
- 1 tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp chilli
- ½ tsp ground coriander (cilantro)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced,
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- ½ tsp cumin seeds
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garam masala
- ½ tsp asafoetida
Boil the lentils in the water in a medium-sized pan with the turmeric, chilli and coriander for 20-30 mins until they start to break down. Fry the onions, garlic and cumin seeds until the onion has started to brown. Add the onion mix and the chopped tomatoes to the lentils and heat through. Add the garam masala and asafoetida, mix well and serve with naan bread for a quick lunch or with another curry or two and some pilau rice for a more substantial meal.
